Tea Talk Tuesday : Kira from Kira Tabor

     Displaying IMG_2851.jpg
I've gone to school with Kira since 6th grade, (and saw her complete her last day at our school this last year before journeying over to the public high school!), and have really gotten to know her more this year. We really clicked when we both got serious about blogging, and she was someone I could really talk to about coding, writing, and all the bloggy talk that comes with having your own corner of the internet.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Bonjour, my name is Kira. If I'm not traveling you can find me with a book in one hand and a cappuccino in the other. I'm not your typical high school sophomore; instead of going to a football game I would rather be brunching and shopping in New York City, or traveling to foreign land  (France, Italy, Japan and Morocco sound lovely). My happy corner of the Internet reflects my love for timeless, classic fashion, clean, crisp photography and my voyages all over the world.

What's a day in the life like for you?
Wakeup. Workout. Smoothie. Online classes. Life. Oh, don't worry there are plenty of photo ops and catnaps thrown in between. ;)

What's the greatest thing that's come from blogging?
The single greatest thing that has come from blogging is self-discovery. I have connected with many people and (hopefully) inspired other people. I have found my true personal style by being connected with different blogs and companies all over the World Wide Web.

You recently go to go on an amazing trip to Ecuador and the Galopagos. Tell us a little bit about that experience!
I’ve hit Europe pretty hard, seventeen countries to be exact. South America has always been on my bucket list. I had been craving a different scenery and culture. Ecuador was amazing. Their local textiles, food and dances were colorful and exotic. Americans have everything at their fingertips, yet they can have a cold heart. Ecuadorians, who work very hard got everything that they earn, are the most warm and welcoming people. Their hearts are filled with kindness, and they are more than happy to proclaim how proud they are of the country that they call home. Ecuador is also home to the Galapagos Islands, you know like the one Charles Darwin created his theory of evolution. The Galapagos are uninhabited islands that are home to the most beautiful, exotic forms of wildlife: giant tortoises, marine and land iguanas, blue-footed boobies, sea lions and lots of beautiful underwater life like sharks, whales and rays. Stepping back and enjoying beautiful geographical and nature creations of the world in their simplest, yet most complex form ... I just cannot even begin to put my feelings into words. If you haven’t already, add Galapagos and Ecuador to your travel bucket list.

What's your favorite way to brainstorm new ideas for your blog?
For me blogging is how I document things that I encounter and things that I do. There is no true way to brainstorm posts for me except for going out into the world doing something amazing and using my blog to reflect with pictures and minimal words on my experience. I also like to document things that inspire me and people that I look up to.

How do you stay organized during the school year? What agenda do you plan on using for the 2014-15 school year?
During the school year, my planner is my absolute best friend. I write every single thing down that I need to do, I need to remember, people I need to talk to, etc. Just seeing everything before my eyes keeps me moving forward. I also like the satisfying feeling of crossing things out. Even though we live in the era of technology, I prefer to keep school – old school.

You're going out for a fun brunch with friends. What's your order and what will you be wearing?
White dresses and strappy sandals are a must wear for brunch. As for food goes, I’ve basically got a routine. Always start off with a cappuccino no matter what. After that a croissant to share, followed by waffles with fresh berries or a delightful sandwich on a crunchy baguette.

What are some of your favorite places to shop? How do you find great deals at these stores?
J. Crew and Anthropologie are basically the only places I shop. However, I hardly buy anything at the full price. There are two main secrets to my shopping success: be a member to receive special discounts and THE SALE SECTION IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. True life: I bought a $200 jacket at J. Crew for roughly $45 dollars. That was basically the happiest day of my life.

What pieces of jewelry do you wear on a daily basis?
Always the MK rose gold watch and the Tiffany & Co. tags, always.

You can only have 5 pairs of shoes in your closet. What will they be?

What are your favorite apps, other than social media?
Hmm, I don’t really play games because I tend to get pretty frustrated but when I do I play 2048. No, I haven’t gotten the 2048 tile yet. MyFitnessPal is pretty cool, and I do all of my Instagram edits with VSCO Cam!

Favorite tourist locations in Charleston?
Charleston is an amazing place to call home. Over the years I have played tourist in my own town, and I have my few favorite places to go. King Street is an amazing place to go shopping: Anthropologie, J. Crew, Madewell, Kate Spade. Of course, we cannot forget the beautiful Charleston Place hotel. Grabbing brunch, picking up a chocolate covered strawberry and browsing the expensive stores are the highlights. There is also the Old Marketplace that once was a place where the slave trade was held. There you can purchase lovely Charleston-made goods like benne wafers, jewelry and soaps. The Battery and the Pineapple Fountain Park are great waterfront picnic spots. My favorite places to grab a bite in Charleston include 39 Rue de Jean, Sermets and of course Sugar Bakeshop!

Where can we find you on social media?

Kira has been so much fun to work with and I've loved getting to connect with her personally through blogging! It's so helpful finding someone in your area who is the same age with the same goals and interests, such as blogging!

Q - What do you think it means to be classy?
Classy is a timeless and classic style that will never be out of style. It's modest, comfortable, and casual.

Q - Who are some of your role models?
One of my biggest role models in terms of blogging has to be Carly. She started blogging her Freshman Year at Georgetown University and has been able to grow her blog tremendously since. Lifestyle wise, probably Jackie O; she always had impeccable style and after reading These Few Precious Days I fell in love even more.

Q - Who are some of your style icons?
Like I previously stated, Jackie O, as well as Kate Middleton, and tons and tons of bloggers (I love looking at style/outfit posts!). If I could go back to the early 1900's and wear what Michelle Dockery wears on Downton Abbey, she'd be my style icon hands down!

Q - Pearls or bows?
Pearls!

Q - Who/What inspires you?
Other bloggers! I love seeing the content they've come up with themselves and the accomplishments they've made through blogging. It shows me how much my blog will grow in the future and gives me ideas for future posts.

Q - What is your favorite color?
Navy, hands down.

Q - Do you like the 'classy' style? What are some of your favorite pieces/trends of the style?
I love the 'classy' style. Some of my favorite pieces include a pair of simple black pants, a button down, comfortable flats, versatile cardigan, shift/shirt dress(es), and a navy skirt.

Q - What are some of your favorite quotes?

T-shirt verse Scripture Art Jeremiah 2911 Print Bible Verse 11x14 by LilyandVal    A well traveled woman

I nominate:

Tea Talk Tuesday : Natalie from The PDX Prepster

In the past six months or so, I've fallen head over heels for Natalie's blog, The PDX Prepster! You can tell by reading Natalie's blog that she loves what she's doing and she is always creating fun content to read. (One of my most recent favorites was her feature on Caroline from Citrus and Style! She put together the perfect post about combining blogging and high school!) I hope you enjoy this week's installment of Tea Talk Tuesday!

Tell us a little about yourself!
Hey there A thousand Tomorrow’s Readers! My name is Natalie and I blog over at The
PDX Prepster. I have been blogging for about a year now and I am constantly amazed
by the opportunities and friendships it’s brought me. I was born and raised in Portland
Oregon and am a student at Oregon State University in the college of business. I’m a
coffee addict and basically have a cup at my side all hours of the day and mostly work
from home in my home office.

How do you stay organized between school and blogging?
I try my best, haha. Some weeks are better than others. I stick to a planner and my to
do list, but sometimes it definitely feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get
everything done. I also work from home managing social media for my school so I spend
a ton of time at my desk. Sometimes heading to class is a nice break from my office and
forces me to get out grab a coffee and meet up with my friends. I swear I would never
leave my apartment unless I had a reason to go somewhere, a bad habit for sure!

What's your dream job?
I’ve always thought that working at Pixar Studios or Walt Disney Imagineering would be
the best job ever. I have such a Disney soft spot and went to the parks annually as a little
one. It would be so fun to work with such creative people on attraction and film concepts.
Disney is full of magic and I would love to work on projects similar to ones that made me
oh-so happy as a child.

What prompted you to starting your own blog?
In Portland, I always felt a little bit like a fish out of water. The popular “hipster” styles
here were never really my thing. No one here has even heard of Jack Rodgers let alone
Lilly Pulitzer, and I often would get asked “what do those letters mean?” with my
monogram hanging around my neck. Finding other girls with similar style cross country
combined with the need for a creative outlet prompted me to start The PDX Prepster.

Where would your dream home be located and what would it look like?
I’m totally loving apartment life right now! As much as I would like to immediately
move in to a big beautiful house I kind of see myself staying in an apartment for the
next few years. I definitely would like to move to the city at some point, whether it is in
Seattle, New York, San Francisco or somewhere else. Right now I just don’t know
As far as what it would look like, bright and colorful for sure! I have to watch myself
when it comes to decorating. If I’m not careful absolutely everything in my house would
be bright, colorful, or patterned. I have to force myself to go with neutrals when I’m
shopping for my home. Power to the people who are minimalists, I envy you.

Current trends your loving?
6. Embroidery! I couldn’t be more in love with it this summer! Whether it’s on a 300$ Tory
Burch Tunic or a 15$ Forever 21 dress I can’t get enough of it lately. I also love pom-
poms and tassels on just about anything.

What's your favorite way to stay healthy and active?
Oh golly I am the worst person to ask for advice about this. I basically drag myself to the
gym every day to get my hour in. However with that said I always feel so much better
afterward when I return to my desk for work. It’s such a process.
On the food end of things I swear by a fruit and veggie overdose with my normal meals.
That’s about it. If I start to feel gross or not like myself, it’s probably because my veggie/
fruit intake is low. I don’t think replacing meals with smoothies and juicing is healthy
by any means, but I definitely love them for getting that extra vitamin punch in during
my day. My current favorite smoothie that I make at home is with kale and mango. The
sweetness of the mango definitely offsets the kale and is omg super good! Sometimes I
order juices from PDX juice press or Blueprint for days when I’m extra lazy or traveling.

Favorite apps?
Unroll Me! There is nothing I hate more than junk email and it lets you know what email
lists your subscribed to and how to get off of them. It’s made my inbox a much happier
place. The app Uber also came in handy on my recent trip to NYC. I definitely preferred
it to taking a taxi around the city.

Future blogging goals?
9. More conferences! I just went to the Smart Girls Conference in July and loved it! It was
so great to meet other bloggers and various inspiring people. I left totally refreshed and
ready for some new growth on the blog. It’s so nice to meet with people face to face and
it’s safe to say I’m addicted.

Where can we find you on social media?
10. Just about everywhere! You can find me on Instagram @pdxprepster and on all other
channels @thepdxprepster.

I hope you enjoyed this week's installment of Tea Talk Tuesday! Come back August 23 for a fun interview with Kira from Kira Tabor!

Music That Moves + Spotify Playlists : #blogtemberchallenge

Sept 8th: Music that moves you. Are you a Spotify addict or a Pandora guru? Tell us your favorite artists/stations!

If you're new to this blog (welcome!), one thing you should know about me is that I love singing. I have the amazing opportunity of getting to do it each day for 90 minutes at school, plus private lessons here and there. I definitely tend to stick towards the classical side of things, but branching out is always fun too!

One thing that sets me apart from the crowd is that I don't really keep myself up to date with the latest music, singers, and bands. It's just not something that amuses me as much as others! I like listening to music, but I'm not one to constantly have it playing in the car or at home - I'm one of those people who cannot work with music (or any noise, for that matter!) in the background. I find it easily distracting and I can't read or focus when there's other words running through my head.
But, even though I don't always have my headphones in, when I do, I'm very specific about the music I'm listening. I became an avid Spotify user (find my profile here!) earlier this year and absolutely love that you can customize your own playlists and create exactly what you want. I like listening to other playlists that my friends have made (or other bloggers!), but also like listening to the ones I know I'll like!

Below are some of my favorite Spotify Playlists! They're a mix of ones I've personally created and ones that I've mashed together from multiple playlists I love!

love of broadway // a playlist with all my favorite romance songs of Broadway (I also love the "this is love" playlist!)

The Fault in Our Stars // love this soundtrack - my favorite has to be "Boom Clap"!

College Prepster Playlists // whenever Carly puts together a monthly soundtrack, I dump it here! It's just one less playlist to worry about and it's fun to browse her entire selection. (I love her Pump Up playlist!)

BROADWAY // pretty self explanatory, but I've just made a compilation of my favorite songs from some of my favorite Broadway shows! (Cinderella, Hairspray, Pippin, and more!)

Christian // I've made a mash-up of my favorite songs from my favorite Christian bands! My church recently released their own album, which is also one of my favorite playlists!
What are some of your favorite playlists?

Happy Monday!

{ Currently } Reading : #blogtemberchallenge

I'm definitely a book worm. I love getting recommendations from friends (Shout out to Margaret and Mrs. Boyles!), and looking on Goodreads for reviews of books as well.
Margaret sent me Kisses from Katie and I absolutely love it so far. I'm about half way through and I've fallen in love with Katie and her ministry that she's set up in Uganda.

Katie (read more about her here!) started her ministry the summer before she was supposed to begin her Freshman year of college. After realizing that her heart belonged in Uganda, she took a year off and began working full-time in Uganda, setting up "Amazima Ministries", a group that supports over 245 children, allowing them to go to school.

What amazes me most about Katie is her faith. She always turns to God in the good and bad situations, she's always sharing her different perspectives on different parables in the Bible and is constantly referencing bible verses. She was willing to give up her perfect life in Tennessee to follow God's plan for her.

What are you currently reading?

Currently, In September : #blogtemberchallenge

Today's Prompt : A "currently" post. Tell us what you're loving, hating, reading, etc.!

( post set-up adapted from Brave Love Blog )

... reading Kisses from Katie. Her faith and reliance on God are tremendously apparent in her inspirational book.

... watching lots of YouTube and 19 Kids and Counting.

... listening to lots of Broadway! Follow me on Spotify to view all my playlists!

... singing lots of audition music! I'm auditioning for National Choir this month (it's going to be held in Salt Lake City UT!), All-State in November, All-County somewhere in there, and Governor's School in February!

... trying to stay organized between blogging and school. I'm also trying a new devotional out this month, so I'll have to see how that goes!

... wishing this hot weather would end in Charleston. I'm so done with the heat, I want to pull out the sweaters and jeans!

... tweeting all about this challenge! I love connecting with the other bloggers who are participating.

... loving skirts and dresses. With the heat, I find it easiest to pull on a skirt or a dress. And they're so simple to create an outfit with!

... discovering that I'm sick of selfies. I've been snapchatting non-stop this week I'm getting tired of so many selfies! #thestruggle

... hoping that I get over this cold! I've been battling a cold since I got back to school (germ overload) and it's affecting my motivation and singing!

... praying for guidance, God's plan for me, upcoming tests, and my best friends

... enjoying the weekend. And work! I haven't shared this on the blog, but I recently began working in my church's nursery this month. I work each Wednesday night and play with kids while their parents are in service. It's such a fun environment and I love their sweet giggles!

... addicted to caffeine. I made sure to leave the house each morning this week with a cup of coffee in my hand.

... starting homework and planning for the upcoming week.

Do you like this style of posts? I'm kind of in love with them!

xoxo

Fashion Loves and Hates

I'm not one to keep track of the latest trends, as I tend to stick to classic and versatile pieces. But, I'm always watching to see what trends are popping, whether it's on my favorite blog or scrolling through Pinterest.

Today's prompt : Pick a fashion trend you love and a fashion trend you hate. Win us over!

My Love : Blazers

I love the classic and chic look of a blazer. It adds the perfect touch to any outfit and is super versatile. It's on my fall/winter wish list!

Style for Less: Colored Skinny Jeans, Preppy Blazers and Leopard Print Wedges | Kelly in the City

There's such a preppy association with blazers, but I think they're a staple in anyone's closet, especially as a student. They're perfect for class presentations and such!

I Despise : Crop Tops

I'm sorry, but I can't jump on the band wagon. I know there's cute and fun ways to style them, but there's something about a crop top that doesn't win me over.

If you love the denim-on-denim look, try adding an oversized denim crop top to your next outfit. How to pull off a crop top no matter where you are!
I think the biggest thing about them is the lack of modesty with the tops, but that's just how I feel and tend to dress - modesty is the way to go in my book.

What are your fashion loves and hates?

xoxo

C is for Cookie

*Recipe from America's Test Kitchen*

I am definitely no baker - put me on the show "Next Great Baker" and I would have no clue what to do after the first challenge was assigned, guaranteed. In fact, I don't think I've ever posted a recipe here on the blog, so this should be fun! I wish I could bake as well as my blogging bestie Monogram Meredith, but she's too incredible to ever match!
Even though I'm not the best, I still love to utilize spare time (when I'm in the mood), to bake something fun to share with family or friends! It doesn't happen too often, but when it does, I find it fun, and with me cooking, quite messy!
Back in August, right before school started, I decided to make a batch of "Thick" (originally "big", if you look at the recipe!) and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies! They lasted less than 24 hours in our house of five people, and were so good. They were perfect on the last few days of summer, and were definitely the perfect treat! These cookies would be perfect to take to a late summer BBQ, fall party, or Christmas party when it comes time.

Makes : about 20 cookies (I managed to make 27, it all depends on the size!)
Prep Time : 5 minutes
Total Time : 35 minutes plus cooking time

You Will Need :
3 1/2 C all-purpose flour
3/4 TSP baking soda
1/2 TSP salt
2 Sticks Unsalted Butter, melted and cooled
You use melted butter instead of softened butter in order to make the cookie more chewy.
1 1/4 C packed light brown sugar
1/2 C granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 egg yolks
This keeps the cookies from becoming tough, after adding the melted butter. This helps the cookie to stay tender.
1 TBS vanilla extract
2 C semisweet chocolate chips

Steps 1 and 2
1. Adjust the oven racks to the upper- and lower-middle positions and preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl. Set aside.
2. Beat the butter and sugars in a large bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until combined, 1-2 minutes. Beat in the eggs, egg yolks, and vanilla until combined, about 30 seconds. Scrape down the bowl and beater(s) as necessary. (I love using these small spatulas!)

Steps 3:
Reduce the speed of the mixer to low and slowly mix in the flour mixture until combined, about 30 seconds. Mix in the chocolate chips until incorporated.

Step 4 :
Working with 1/4 cup of dough at a time, roll the dough into balls and lay on two parchment lined baking sheets, spaced about 2 1/2 inches apart. Bake until the edges are golden but the centers are still soft and puffy, roughly 17-20 minutes, rotating and switching the baking sheets halfway through baking.
Something my mom has always done, and has taught me to do, is to use a cookie scooper (from Williams Sonoma via OXO) in order to get the perfect, round shape. This ends up with less of a mess on your hands and is very quick and easy to do!

Step 5 :
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then serve warm or transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely. Then enjoy!
You're removing the cookies from the oven before they look completely baked and letting them finish baking on the hot cookie sheet to help the cookies to set without overbaking them and ruining the chewiness.

These were honestly some of the best cookies I've had (way to go, America's Test Kitchen!), and reminded me of cookies I eat at camp. Grab yourself a glass of milk, and you're going to keep asking for more!

What are some of your favorite desserts to make?
xoxo
